The problem
Intervention: Integration of early childhood development group sessions into PMTCT Option B+ clinic visits, where mothers receive ECD activities while waiting for HIV consultations
Who it was tested with: 197 mothers living with HIV enrolled in PMTCT services in Malawi with infants aged ≤8 weeks; 114 completed 9-month follow-up; 62 completed in-depth interviews.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Group ECD sessions were delivered while mothers waited for HIV consultations. Follow up was conducted at 9 months postnatal. A sub-sample of mothers completed in-depth interviews which were translated, transcribed, and analyzed." The study examined acceptability and feasibility through qualitative methods without measuring clinical or developmental outcomes, placing it at the practitioner evidence tier.
The study was designed to assess feasibility and acceptability only, not to measure effects on actual child health and development outcomes or maternal HIV adherence and retention. Interview completion was 54% of those who enrolled. There was no comparison group to assess whether observed improvements resulted from the intervention.
