The problem
Intervention: COVID-19 vaccination
Who it was tested with: Children aged 0-17 years in Denmark during delta variant dominance (August 2021 to February 2022).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This prospective, population-based cohort study included patients aged 0-17 years hospitalised with MIS-C in Denmark, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case definition, from Aug 1, 2021, to Feb 1, 2022, a period dominated by the delta variant. We identified MIS-C cases via a nationwide research collaboration involving real-time data collection from all 18 paediatric departments." This design directly compared incidence rates between vaccination groups using comprehensive national surveillance data, providing strong evidence of vaccine effectiveness.
Small number of MIS-C cases in vaccinated group (n=1) limits precision of estimates in that stratum. Study limited to Denmark and one time period. Does not establish whether protection is from prevention of infection or reduced severity after breakthrough infection.
