The problem
Intervention: A 10-week Nurturing Attachments group programme delivered by an NHS service, providing support and education to foster carers
Who it was tested with: 82 foster carers and children in care in the UK (12 groups from September 2017 to July 2023).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Carers completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, the Child-Parent Relationship Scale and the Brief Parental Self-Efficacy Scale at the three time points... Quantitative data were analysed using repeated-measures analysis of variance tests (ANOVAs) and t-tests." The design measures the same group at multiple timepoints but lacks a comparison group to establish whether changes resulted from the intervention.
High attrition rate (82 to 29 participants across timepoints), no control group, service evaluation design limits causal inference, small sample size at follow-up reduces statistical power
