The problem
Intervention: Identification and monitoring of suicidality trajectories to inform targeted suicide prevention interventions (no specific intervention was tested)
Who it was tested with: 1,505 adolescents from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, ages 13-23, with 11.5% reporting sexually diverse attraction.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Growth curve modelling tested the random effect of sexually diverse (vs. heterosexual) attraction on suicidality severity intercept, linear and quadratic latent growth factors." This longitudinal comparison with multiple measurement points allows for tracking developmental patterns over time, though no intervention was tested to determine what could prevent or reduce suicidality in this population.
The study describes trajectories and associations but does not evaluate the effectiveness of any intervention. It is observational and cannot establish causal mechanisms. The three-item measure of suicidality may not capture full complexity of suicidal behaviour.
