The problem
Intervention: Mobile phone reminders and recalls sent to caregivers to prompt them to bring infants for scheduled immunisation visits
Who it was tested with: Caregivers of infants aged from BCG/Pentavalent 1 visit through final scheduled immunisation visit in two rural health facilities in Abakaliki, Nigeria.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Caregiver-child pair was recruited during the infants' BCG or Pentavalent vaccines 1 immunisation visit and followed till the final scheduled immunisation visit for each child... A greater proportion of respondents in the intervention group (8.3%) missed vaccination at the 6th and 10th weeks when compared with the 4.1% and 6.9%... In the control group, a greater proportion (22.1%) missed vaccination than the intervention group (8.9%) at the 14th week." The study measured the same population before and after the intervention was implemented, with comparison to a control group, making it quasi-experimental rather than purely pre-post.
The quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent groups assigned by facility rather than randomisation; outcomes mixed across different timepoints; baseline comparability between groups not reported
