The problem
Intervention: Providing mothers with mobile phone voice or text (SMS) reminder messages two days prior to each scheduled immunisation and vitamin A supplementation visit, plus two additional reminders for missed doses
Who it was tested with: Mothers and infants (n=1,596 total; 798 intervention, 798 control) in Korhogo district, Côte d'Ivoire.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Mothers were randomized to receive a voice or text reminder message two days prior to each scheduled visit and two additional reminders for missed doses (n=798; intervention group), or no phone reminder messages (n=798; control group)." The randomised design with clearly defined intervention and control groups and quantified health outcomes provides experimental-level evidence of the intervention's effectiveness.
