The problem
Intervention: vaccination coverage (immunisation)
Who it was tested with: Children in Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly those aged 1-4 years.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We collected publicly available weekly case counts data for 45 weeks from the Public Health Institute of Sarajevo Canton and examined the vaccination coverage for 5 years to assess the impact of immunisation on outbreak dynamics." The evidence demonstrates that inadequate vaccination coverage (with most cases unvaccinated) correlates with substantially larger measles outbreaks, indicating that current vaccination programmes are not preventing disease transmission.
Study uses aggregated surveillance data without individual-level vaccination records for all cases; 9.9% of cases had unknown vaccination status; cannot determine causality of individual vaccination decisions or identify specific barriers to immunisation coverage.
