The problem
Intervention: measles vaccination (comparing vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children with measles)
Who it was tested with: Children < 18 years with laboratory-confirmed measles admitted to PICUs in Istanbul, Türkiye (n=53; median age 1.3 years).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This multicenter retrospective study included children < 18 years with laboratory-confirmed measles admitted to ten PICUs in Istanbul, Türkiye, between January and December 2023." The study compares outcomes between vaccinated and unvaccinated children, showing vaccination is associated with better respiratory status at admission and generally less severe presentation, supporting vaccination effectiveness.
Small sample size limits statistical power; observational design without concurrent control group; unable to control for confounding variables; differences in some severe outcomes (ARDS, inotropic support, invasive ventilation) were not statistically significant despite trends.
