The problem
Intervention: Systematic aesthetic education activities delivered over 12 weeks, focusing on activities designed to develop empathy ability, moral identity, helping behavior, and cooperative behavior
Who it was tested with: 200 primary school students in grades 3-6 from two public schools in eastern China.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A 12-week systematic aesthetic education activity was implemented, focusing on core outcome variables such as empathy ability, moral identity, helping behavior, and cooperative behavior. The results indicate that, after controlling for baseline differences and family socioeconomic background, students in the experimental group showed higher post-test scores in empathy and helping behavior." The study used a quasi-experimental design comparing treatment and control groups with baseline adjustments and follow-up measurement, making it capable of demonstrating intervention effects.
Study limited to two schools in one provincial capital city; specific aesthetic education activities not detailed; no information on intervention fidelity or quality of implementation; heterogeneous effects by gender and grade suggest context-dependent results.
