The problem
Intervention: Community-wide Parenting for Lifelong Health programmes combined with an action media intervention to amplify positive parenting messages across the community
Who it was tested with: Parents and children aged 10+ in South African communities; 536 parent-child dyads in surveys.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Three community-wide surveys of parents and of children aged 10+ were conducted at baseline and at 18-month intervals." This pre-post design with repeated measurements over three years allows tracking of changes in parenting and child outcomes, but without a control community, alternative explanations for improvements (such as employment gains) cannot be ruled out.
No comparison group or randomisation; low programme uptake (20.5%) limits ability to assess intervention impact; improvements in children's mental health may be confounded by increased parent employment; action media component showed small negative associations with some outcomes.
