The problem
Intervention: Antenatal care services through China's three-tier maternal care system
Who it was tested with: Mother-child dyads in Shanxi and Guizhou provinces, China (n=1,660).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted for mothers' ANC visits and assessments of early childhood development." The study measured ANC visit frequency in predefined categories and assessed developmental delay status concurrently, representing a snapshot approach without longitudinal follow-up or experimental manipulation.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference. No comparison group with manipulation of ANC exposure. Cannot determine whether ANC directly causes better development or if other factors explain both higher ANC use and better outcomes.
