The problem
Intervention: Not an intervention study; rather an observational analysis to document disparities and develop a knowledge agenda with stakeholders for future location-based policies
Who it was tested with: 1,118,022 mother-child pairs born in the Netherlands, 2015-2021, comparing births in 20 high-risk neighbourhoods with births in the rest of the country.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using data from the national perinatal registry (Perined) from 2015 to 2021, we analysed perinatal outcomes in 1 118 022 mother-child pairs, including perinatal mortality, small for gestational age and preterm birth. Three-step logistic regression compared outcomes across all high-risk areas versus the rest of the country." This is a descriptive observational analysis documenting geographic disparities in birth outcomes rather than an evaluation of an intervention.
Observational design cannot establish causation; confounding by unmeasured variables possible; does not test an intervention but documents disparities; the study outlines an initiative to develop tools but does not evaluate their effectiveness.
