The problem
Intervention: Economic empowerment intervention (Suubi + Adherence) combined with measurement of family cohesion, child-caregiver communication, and perceived support
Who it was tested with: HIV-positive adolescents (average age 12.4 years, 56.4% female) in southern Uganda.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted multilevel regression analyses to explore the protective family factors, measured by family cohesion, child-caregiver communication and perceived child-caregiver support, associated with ART adherence self-efficacy." The study identifies family-level factors associated with adolescents' confidence in adhering to HIV treatment, suggesting family strengthening could enhance treatment adherence.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation; measures self-efficacy rather than actual adherence behavior; does not report effect sizes or practical significance; cannot determine whether family interventions would improve actual medication adherence or clinical outcomes.
