The problem
Intervention: Assessment of immunisation service delivery mechanisms including distribution of immunisation cards, proximity of health facilities, and advance notice of vaccination outreach visits
Who it was tested with: 428 children aged 0–23 months and their mothers/caregivers in four rural counties of Western Lakes state, South Sudan.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Community-based cross-sectional study using a semi-structured questionnaire" and "Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyse for the association between the predisposing factors surveyed and being off track with one's routine immunisation schedule." The study identifies associations between service delivery characteristics and immunisation status but lacks a comparison group or longitudinal follow-up needed to establish intervention effectiveness.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference. Limited to four rural counties in one state, so generalisability is restricted. Cannot determine whether unmeasured confounding factors influenced the associations observed.
