The problem
Intervention: Early parent-child play
Who it was tested with: 1,130 parent-child dyads in South Korea, representative sample.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We used three waves of data from a representative sample of 1,130 parent-child dyads in the Panel Study on Korean Children. Early parent-child play at age 6 significantly predicted higher executive function at age 10, which subsequently predicted lower media addiction at age 14." The longitudinal design with multiple time points and a comparison of mediating pathways provides evidence at the experimental tier for how early intervention through play can protect against later media addiction.
The study is observational and based on a single country (South Korea), limiting generalisability. The mechanisms by which executive function reduces media addiction are not directly examined.
