Intervention: Assessment of vitamin D status (25-hydroxyvitamin D measurement) and cognitive and motor outcomes at five years of age
Who it was tested with: 302 Ugandan children from the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study birth cohort with vitamin D measurements before age five and developmental assessment at age five.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We analysed data from 302 Ugandan children with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) measurements below five years and developmental measures at five years of age. We used multivariable linear regression, adjusted for potential confounders, to estimate the effect of 25(OH)D on cognitive and motor outcomes." This longitudinal cohort approach with statistical adjustment for confounders represents an experimental design appropriate for examining associations in prospective data.
Observational study design; low prevalence of severe deficiency may limit detection of associations; single time point measurement of vitamin D before age five.
