The problem
Intervention: Financial incentive to delay marriage for two years, combined with or separate from a girls' empowerment program
Who it was tested with: Girls in Bangladesh eligible for the incentive program.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We experimentally evaluate a financial incentive to delay marriage alongside a girls' empowerment program in Bangladesh. While girls eligible for two years of incentive are 19 percent less likely to marry underage, the empowerment program failed to decrease adolescent marriage." The study used experimental randomisation to test whether financial incentives and empowerment reduce child marriage, making it a rigorous test of the intervention's causal effect.
The study does not report sample size, attrition rates, or long-term follow-up beyond the incentive period. The mechanism of effect (income constraint versus signaling) cannot be fully isolated.
