The problem
Intervention: Enhanced early childhood development program integrated into primary health care, including improved facilities, capacity building, age-adapted clinical consultations on nutrition and stimulation, age-specific parenting group sessions, home visits, referrals for children in need, and electronic data
Who it was tested with: 1,044 families with children aged 6-23 months recruited across 58 clusters in 3 Chinese counties with different socioeconomic development levels.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This study involves a multicenter cluster randomized controlled superiority trial in 3 counties with different levels of socioeconomic development in China. Fifty-eight clusters will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to intervention and control groups, stratified by county." This design establishes it as an experimental trial, though results are not yet available to determine whether the intervention works.
This document is a protocol describing the planned methodology rather than actual results. The outcome data collection was only recently completed (January 2026), so no findings on intervention effectiveness are available yet.
