The problem
Intervention: Computer game-based instructional activities integrated into the curriculum, 1 hour per week for 4 weeks
Who it was tested with: 61 preschool children aged 4-6 years (36 males, 25 females) from a private preschool in central Taiwan.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Data were gathered through preintervention and postintervention assessments using standardized scales for physical motor and social interaction development... adjusted for baseline differences using prior test scores as covariates." The study measured the same groups before and after intervention with a comparison group, and used analysis of covariance to adjust for baseline differences, constituting a quasi-experimental design.
Unequal group sizes (41 vs 20) due to convenience sampling and classroom assignment; single private preschool limits generalizability; short 4-week intervention period with no long-term follow-up; social interaction outcomes showed no significant difference despite qualitative observations of improvement in 3 children with developmental delays
