The problem
Intervention: Community-based cross-sectional survey to assess hepatitis B vaccination coverage, timeliness, and determinants of non-adherence to WHO-recommended immunisation schedules
Who it was tested with: Children born in 2016 (year of birth dose introduction) and 2017-2018 in Niakhar, Senegal (241 children with available data).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Vaccination status was assessed from vaccination cards, surveillance data, and healthcare post vaccination records. Among 241 children with available data, for 2016 and 2017-2018, respectively, 31.0% and 66.8% received the BD within 24 h of birth (BD schedule)..." The study documents baseline coverage and identifies sociodemographic factors associated with vaccination timeliness, providing evidence of the scale and determinants of non-adherence following the introduction of birth dose vaccination in Senegal.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causality. Limited to one region in Senegal; generalisability to other settings unclear. Relies on vaccination cards and records which may have gaps.
