The problem
Intervention: Examination of caregiver mental health as a mediating factor; implied focus on understanding the mechanisms through which caregiver mental health influences child outcomes to inform targeted support
Who it was tested with: 663 children and adolescents aged 10-17 years in Sierra Leone (217 EVD-infected, 206 EVD-affected, 230 controls) and their caregivers.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using a case-control study design, we recruited 663 children and adolescents... at 2 time points... Using a structural equation model, we examined the mediating effects of caregiver anxiety and depression." The study employed a comparison group design with multiple measurement points and advanced statistical modeling to identify mechanisms linking EVD exposure to child behavioral outcomes through caregiver mental health pathways.
Study uses observational case-control design without random assignment; cannot definitively establish causation. Cross-sectional mediation analysis at two time points limits ability to determine temporal sequencing of caregiver and child mental health outcomes.
