The problem
Intervention: Potential interventions to improve maternal mental health (proposed but not yet evaluated in this study)
Who it was tested with: Children aged 7-9 years in rural Ethiopia whose mothers had common mental disorders.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"After adjusting for potential confounders, exposure to maternal CMD at 7/8 years was associated significantly with school dropout... and absenteeism... There was no association between maternal CMD and child academic achievement." The study measures the relationship between maternal mental health and educational outcomes but does not evaluate whether interventions to improve maternal mental health actually reduce these problems.
This is an observational cohort study examining association, not a trial of an intervention to improve maternal mental health. The study cannot determine whether treating maternal mental disorders would improve child school outcomes. Reverse causality cannot be excluded.
