The problem
Intervention: Women's empowerment, measured as freedom from family domination and control over household decision-making at six weeks postpartum
Who it was tested with: 397 women with at least mild anxiety symptoms from a perinatal anxiety intervention trial at Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Interaction terms were used to examine whether empowerment at six weeks postpartum moderated the association between IPV and child developmental delay at six weeks postpartum." The study uses statistical moderation analysis to test whether women's empowerment reduces the harmful association between IPV and infant development, with results suggesting empowerment may serve as a protective factor.
Study is cross-sectional with all measurements at six weeks postpartum, limiting causal inference. Sample restricted to anxious women in one hospital setting in Pakistan. The empowerment measure used only four items reflecting one dimension of empowerment. Direction of causality between empowerment and protective effects cannot be established.
