The problem
Intervention: Strengthening women's agency within household decision-making
Who it was tested with: Mother-child pairs in Peru (n=12,696 with complete empowerment data).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study using nationally representative data from the 2021 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), including 16,650 mother-child pairs... Stunting was defined as height-for-age below -2 standard deviations of WHO standards. Women's empowerment was measured using the SWPER Global index and categorised into tertiles." The study measures the association between maternal decision-making empowerment and child stunting outcomes using survey data, demonstrating a relationship but not establishing causal mechanisms.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causality; selection bias possible due to restriction to complete data cases; uses observational data which cannot control for unmeasured confounding; cannot determine if empowerment leads to better nutrition or if other factors explain both
