The problem
Intervention: Maternal and paternal emotion socialization practices including emotion encouragement, emotion talk and sharing, and emotion teaching
Who it was tested with: Urban Chinese children (N=272, 52.9% boys, mean age 9.77 years) and their mothers (247) and fathers (191).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"a 15-year longitudinal project of urban Chinese families and examined both concurrent and longitudinal associations between parental emotion socialization (ES) practices and youth psychosocial adjustment from early- to mid-adolescence" followed by data collection at two measurement waves 5 years apart with regression models testing associations. This is a longitudinal observational design with a long follow-up period examining how parental practices predict change in child outcomes over time.
Study limited to urban Chinese families; relies on self-reported data; differential participation rates between mothers (247) and fathers (191) may introduce bias
