The problem
Intervention: Monitoring and assessment of perinatal maternal distress and child outcomes; no intervention was delivered
Who it was tested with: Children and mothers from the Pregnancy during the COVID-19 Pandemic (PdP) study, with n=62 for neuroimaging and larger n for behavioural analysis.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Maternal distress (anxiety and depression symptoms) was self-reported throughout the perinatal period; analyses included measures from intake survey and 2 years postpartum. Child behaviour at 2 and 3 years was parent-reported using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3). Resting-state fMRI data was collected at 2 years (n = 62) to quantify connectivity within the default mode, executive control, frontoparietal, and sensorimotor networks." This is a prospective observational study measuring the same population over time with baseline and follow-up measures, but lacking a comparison or control group.
No randomised or quasi-experimental comparison group; study is observational only. Neuroimaging sample size was modest (n=62). Mechanism underlying the associations remains unclear.
