The problem
Intervention: Scholarship-based programme to support secondary education for adolescent girls
Who it was tested with: Adolescent girls in Niger.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using a large-scale randomized controlled trial, we find that after three years of implementation, the intervention led to large and positive effects. It halved both dropout and marriage rates." This is a rigorous experimental design with random assignment, comparison group, and measurement over time, making it the highest evidence tier available.
The study does not report effect sizes with confidence intervals, cost-effectiveness data, or mechanisms of change. Long-term sustainability and outcomes beyond three years are not discussed.
