The problem
Intervention: Increased maternal autonomy (measured as decision-making power, tolerance of domestic violence, and financial independence)
Who it was tested with: 7,348 mother-child pairs from Malawi Demographic and Health Surveys (2010 and 2015/16); mothers aged 15-49 years, children aged 0-59 months.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We utilized nationally representative pooled cross-sectional data from the 2010 and 2015/16 Malawi Demographic and Health Surveys (MDHS)" and "Logistic regression assessed associations between maternal autonomy and stunting." This is a observational study design that measures associations over time but cannot establish causation or rule out alternative explanations for the observed relationship.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; the association may be confounded by unmeasured variables; concurrent interventional programs during the study period may have contributed to the observed decrease in stunting, making it difficult to isolate the independent effect of maternal autonomy.
