The problem
Intervention: Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) programs
Who it was tested with: Women and girls in humanitarian contexts across Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The authors conducted a systematic review to examine the current quantitative evidence available on the impact and effectiveness of WGSS programs." The review pooled findings from multiple evaluations with comparison approaches, representing the highest level of existing evidence available, though the individual studies themselves varied in rigor.
Only seven studies met inclusion criteria; heterogeneity in study quality with only three employing rigorous methods; limited evidence on whether WGSS achieve their primary goal of reducing VAWG; review restricted to quantitative evidence.
