This paper examines what a child-friendly environment is like from the perspective of Shanghai children, thematically analyzing the group reports, group proposals and self-reports by children who participated in the HG community park renewal project in Shanghai. Shanghai children believe that a child-friendly environment, or a park, must be safe, in harmony with nature, and should also cater to their basic needs for leisure and entertainment, while also providing educational and learning opportunities. This indicates that Shanghai children’s conceptualizations of a friendly environment reflect both more universal values, norms and needs related to children during a specific life course stage, and unique Chinese features. On the one hand, these expectations reflect a general understanding of the relationship between children’s development and the urban environment. On the other hand, the formation of child-friendly concepts is influenced by the specific sociocultural context in which Shanghai children’s lives are unfolding. This paper highlights how contemporary urban life in Shanghai affects children’s conceptualizations of a child-friendly park, arguing that both traditional Chinese cultural concepts of harmony between humans and nature, and the highly competitive pressure from Chinese parents’ emphasis on education and the rigorous school system shape Shanghai children’s understandings of a desirable urban environment.
Parental involvement in early childhood education (ECE) is a crucial factor in supporting holistic child development, yet its implementation varies across contexts and policy frameworks. This study aims to analyze ece policies that emphasize parental involvement, including its forms, influencing factors, engagement strategies, and impacts on child development. This research employs a systematic literature review (SLR) approach based on prisma guidelines, using 22 selected journal articles as data sources. Data were analyzed through thematic synthesis to identify patterns, relationships, and variations across studies. The results show that effective ece policies promote parental involvement through structured communication, school–family partnerships, parenting programs, and home-based learning support. Parental involvement is found to significantly contribute to children’s cognitive, social-emotional, and academic development. However, the level of participation is influenced by factors such as parents’ educational background, socio-economic conditions, and awareness of the importance of ece. The study also identifies that strategies based on context-sensitive and sustainable approaches are more effective in enhancing parental engagement. In conclusion, ece policies that integrate structured and sustainable parental involvement play a significant role in improving educational quality and child development outcomes. Therefore, future policies should emphasize context-based and evidence-driven approaches to strengthen parental participation.
BACKGROUND: The importance of promoting child participation in school health has been emphasized internationally. This study examined ways in which Japan's school health system involves children, and factors enabling child participation in this system. It also suggests strategies to promote child participation in school health in developing countries. METHODS: We conducted a document review to clarify the importance of, and recent trends in, child participation in school health. We summarized the system of child participation in school health in Japan and examined factors enabling child participation. RESULTS: We identified the following four factors that enable child participation in school health in Japan: (i) having an explicit legal basis for participatory activities at the national level; (ii) having clear notification, in relevant administrative documents at the prefectural and municipal levels, of the necessity for children's voluntary participation; (iii) establishing a system for teachers to provide support for participatory activities at the school level, and (iv) having a shared understanding among stakeholders about the pedagogical importance of participatory activities in school health. CONCLUSIONS: To promote child participation in school health activities in developing countries, it is necessary to describe clearly the importance, benefits, impacts, and purposes of child participation in relevant legal and administrative documents at relevant administrative levels. Schools should also ensure that stakeholders have a common understanding of the educational benefits of child participation considering the cultural context of each country. It is helpful to conduct appropriate training for teachers to enable them to facilitate child participation.

The comprehension of the Toddler Family Development (TFD) Program among families in Indonesia remains limited, likely due to insufficient access to information and low participation rates. Limited participation can negatively affect a family’s ability to support optimal child growth and development. This study examined the relationship between access to information on the TFD Program and family participation in child growth and development. Using secondary data from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey in Indonesia, the cross-sectional analysis included 21,497 respondents. The results revealed an association between access to information on the TFD Program and family participation in child growth and development (OR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.34–1.75). Families with limited access to TFD program information were 1.5 times more likely not to engage in child growth and development and parenting activities. Engaging in the TFD Program can help parents with the better growth and development of their children under the age of five.
China is at a critical juncture in its rapid population policy adjustment, which will have a profound impact on women's labor-force participation rate, which is related to women's economic independence, the social status of their families, and overall productivity. Against this background, we used CFPS tracking data from 2014 and 2016 to quantitatively analyze the impact of the "comprehensive two-child" policy on female labor-market participation and its heterogeneity, using a dual difference measurement. The study found that the introduction of the "comprehensive two-child" policy significantly reduced female labour participation by 7.29%. The results were still robust when the key variables were changed. Further research has shown that the impact is significantly heterogeneous, i.e. the implementation of the policy has a deeper and more pronounced impact on rural female labour force and female labour participation with one child. Therefore, more flexible employment support measures should be adopted at the government, social and enterprise levels. While ensuring the smooth implementation of child-bearing policies and promoting higher levels of child-bearing, education and training should also be strengthened to improve the earning capacity of couples of child-bearing age. Increase the supply of public pension services and safeguard the rights and interests of the living; Provide effective solutions to the problem that the implementation of policies significantly reduces female labour participation.
Background: Short and long birth spacings have negative effects on the health of mothers and children and consequently on the level of mothers’ employment. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of first and second children spacing on mothers’ labor force participation in Iranian urban households. Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was performed using econometric methods as a probit and probit model with an instrumental variable in Stata version 16 in 2021. The sample size included 8920 urban households in all provinces of Iran, and the data were extracted from the cost and income questionnaire of urban households. Results: The birth spacing of the first and second child had a positive effect equal to 0.16 on the probability of employment of mothers in households with 2 children, which was equal to 0.22 for households with 2 or more children. The coefficients of maternal age, having a private home, father’s education, and father’s age on mothers’ employment were -0.02, -0.09, -0.06, and 0.02 in households with 2 children, respectively. Conclusions: Increasing the birth spacing, especially for the first and second child, led to an increase in the probability of the mother’s employment in the labor market. Therefore, optimal birth spacing is recommended, which improves both the health of the mother and the child and does not reduce job opportunities. In this regard, policies to promote optimal birth spacing through raising awareness, the use of contraceptive methods, and the importance of breastfeeding are also proposed.
