Abstract
Background: Children with cooccurring epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience significant challenges in communication, motor skills, behavioral regulation, and social participation. Addressing these complex developmental needs requires a structured and multidisciplinary therapeutic approach to improve overall quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a structured multidisciplinary therapy program on functional abilities and social participation in a child with epilepsy and ASD. Methods: This case study focuses on an 11-year-old child receiving ongoing care at Epilepsy Foundation India under the guidance of Dr. Nirmal Surya. The intervention consisted of a comprehensive multidisciplinary program including: • Speech therapy • Cognitive behavioral therapy • Occupational therapy • Physiotherapy These interventions targeted communication skills, motor coordination, cognitive development, behavioral regulation, and social interaction. The program was implemented consistently with active family involvement and financial support, ensuring continuity of care. Results: Following sustained intervention, the child demonstrated significant improvements in: • Physical coordination and endurance • Communication abilities • Social engagement and participation These improvements were reflected in active participation and achievements in inclusive sports events during 2025–2026, including interschool competitions and community-based activities such as the Tata Mumbai Marathon Dream Run (5.9 km). The child secured multiple positions (1st, 2nd, and 5th), indicating enhanced confidence, independence, and social inclusion. Conclusion: This case study highlights the effectiveness of continuous multidisciplinary therapy in improving developmental outcomes in children with epilepsy and ASD. Access to integrated therapeutic services, combined with inclusive community participation, plays a vital role in enhancing functional independence, self-esteem, and overall social participation. The findings support the importance of holistic rehabilitation models in pediatric neurodevelopmental care. Publication History Article published online: 15 July 2026 © 2026. The Author(s).
