Background Motor skill development is a central objective of school physical education, yet the comparative effectiveness of teaching models remains unclear. Objective This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared physical education teaching models for motor skill development in school-aged children and adolescents. Methods Records were identified from Scopus ( n = 300), Web of Science ( n = 41), OpenAlex ( n = 63), and PubMed ( n = 33). After removal of 42 duplicates, 395 records were screened, 65 full texts were assessed, and 21 studies were retained in the systematic review. Thirteen studies contributed to the under-18 primary network restricted to school-based physical motor execution or sport-specific performance outcomes; 19 contributed to a broader sensitivity network. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261417609). Random-effects models estimated standardized mean differences (SMD) relative to Control and P -score rankings. Results The primary network contained nine treatment nodes. Hybrid Teaching Games for Understanding–Sport Education (TGfU-SE), Nonlinear pedagogy, and Functional games showed the most favorable relative effect estimates in the primary network. However, the treatment ordering was sensitive to outcome definition, participant age, and individual studies, while substantial heterogeneity, network inconsistency, sparse comparisons, and risk of bias remained. In the broad sensitivity network, Cooperative had the highest P -score and estimated effect only while the single Akil visual-motor integration study was included; the node disappeared when that study was removed. Conclusion Restricting the primary network to participants younger than 18 years improved population and outcome comparability and reduced heterogeneity, but significant inconsistency, sparse comparisons, and risk of bias preclude a definitive hierarchy. The P -score ordering should therefore be interpreted as a set of conditional effect estimates rather than proof that one teaching model is universally superior. In practice, physical education teachers should select and implement structured teaching models according to student age, learning objectives, sport content, and teaching context. Abstract Therapeutic advances and the rapid, cost-effective development of next-generation sequencing (NGS) have increased interest in expanding newborn screening (NBS) through genomics. The SeDeN-p2 study assessed the acceptability among healthcare professionals in France, of expanding NBS, particularly with genetics as a first-line test, by examining areas of convergence and divergence in their expectations. A national cross-sectional survey was conducted between June and December 2021 via professional networks and learned societies involved in NBS and genetics, in partnership with the French Society of Newborn Screening. The questionnaire comprised 101 closed-ended and 14 open-ended questions. After data cleaning, 1077 responses were analysed. Respondents were mainly paediatricians (43%), gynaecologists or midwives (36%), and medical geneticists or genetic counsellors (17%). Support for the inclusion of treatable childhood-onset conditions was very high, with over 95% endorsing their integration into NBS, although 29% still considered the current NBS programme sufficient. Views varied substantially by specialty, particularly regarding the scope of conditions and the use of NGS. Genetics professionals were more conservative, especially concerning variants with limited actionability, organisational constraints, and interpretive uncertainty, while midwives and gynaecologists were generally more favourable. Convergence was strongest for treatable paediatric conditions and shared ethical concerns, notably data misuse, psychosocial burden, and the child’s future autonomy. The need for improved communication with families was widely emphasised. The SeDeN-p2 study shows strong but conditional support among French healthcare professionals for integrating genetics into NBS, providing key insights to inform future policy and practice.

An estimated one billion children live at extremely high risk of adverse effects from climate change. Even when children are not exposed to direct physical impacts, the existential threat of climate change can have a psychological impact by creating a stressor that exacerbates underlying mental health disorders or contributes to the development of new disorders. Children and adolescents worldwide are experiencing high rates of fear and worry related to climate change, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite this disparate impact, most studies on this topic have been conducted in the Global North. The Galápagos Islands are part of a medium-income nation and will face stark impacts of climate change in the coming decades. Currently, it is unknown how the threat of climate change is affecting the mental health of the children living in the islands. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews with children and adolescents on the island of San Cristóbal to determine their thoughts, perspectives, and understanding of climate change ( N = 30). These interviews also required participants to draw what they expect the island to look like in 100 years. We identified major themes from the interview transcripts and drawings, including the children’s personal identification with nature, feelings of anger and frustration, and feelings of sadness and loss regarding climate change. The findings from this study will inform interventions to promote emotional resilience among the children in San Cristóbal, as well as educational initiatives to address knowledge gaps.

Background: Antepartum depression (APD) is a significant public health concern affecting maternal well-being, pregnancy outcomes, and child development. In India, APD remains under-recognized despite its high prevalence. Identifying its burden and determinants is essential for strengthening maternal mental health services. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 210 antenatal mothers attending outpatient and inpatient departments from February to May 2025. Sample size was calculated using prevalence from a South Indian study. Data were collected using a pretested semi-structured questionnaire. APD was assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) with a cut-off score ≥13. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25. Bivariate analysis employed Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, followed by logistic regression for variables with p<0.20. Results: Among the 210 participants, 84 (40.0%) were screened positive for Antepartum depressive symptoms. Maternal education, husband’s occupation, gestational age, social support, and consanguinity showed significant associations. Multivariable analysis identified low/moderate social support (AOR=2.63), gestational age <32 weeks (AOR=3.21), husband’s non-professional occupation (AOR=4.48), and consanguinity (AOR=2.91) factors independently associated with screening-positive antepartum depressive symptoms. Conclusions: APD is highly prevalent, driven largely by psychosocial and socioeconomic factors. Routine EPDS screening and integration of mental health services into antenatal care are strongly recommended. Clinical Significance: Routine screening for antepartum depression using EPDS and identification of high-risk groups such as women with poor social support and socioeconomic stress can improve early detection and management, thereby enhancing maternal and fetal outcomes.
ABSTRACT Early and prolonged parent–child separation (EPPCS) may affect the health and well‐being of affected families. This phenomenon is common but understudied among Chinese immigrant families, especially those living in low‐income communities. Whereas some research has been conducted to understand the mental health and development of separated–reunited children, no research has examined the mental health condition of affected parents. The present study collected interviews ( N = 24) and daily diary survey data (50% of the interview sample) to explore parental mental health and emotions and related factors among Chinese immigrant parents who have reunited with their children after EPPCS. Results integrating qualitative and quantitative analysis showed relatively low challenging mental health conditions in general, yet moderate positive to minor negative emotions (i.e., without extreme emotional reactions) among parents. Factors related to parental mental health included financial stress, children's educational attainment, family relationships, acculturation and homesickness. Parenting stress and a lack of communication with children could affect their negative emotions. Engagement in leisure activities, healthy parent–child bonding, quality family time and the child's advancement in academics were found to be beneficial to parental mental health conditions and positive emotions. The study provides insights for policies and community‐based services to support parents' parenting skills and relationships with their separated children during separation and after reunification.
Abstract Internalizing problems are prevalent in childhood and are associated with exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs); however, their co-development across childhood remains understudied. Prior research documents sociodemographic disparities (i.e., race/ethnicity, sex, income) in ACE exposure and internalizing problems. The current study examined individual and co-developing trajectories of ACEs and internalizing problems and sociodemographic disparities among 4,655 diverse at-risk youth at ages 3, 5, and 9. Participants were 52.2% boys and racially and ethnically diverse, with 44.7% Black, 22.5% Hispanic, 16.7% Other, and 16.2% White youth. Results showed various trajectories with stable levels of cumulative ACE exposure over time and internalizing problems trajectories that decreased or increased over time. Findings provide some evidence for a dose–response relationship between ACEs and internalizing problems. Youth of Color (φ = 0.26, 0.11, 0.19) and from low-income backgrounds ( ϵ 2 = 0.07–0.09, 0.02, 0.06–0.08) were more likely to be in worse trajectories of ACEs, internalizing problems, and joint trajectories across ages 3, 5, and 9, respectively. Findings underscore the need for culturally responsive trauma-informed interventions and policy-level efforts that target the root cause of inequities.

Abstract Purpose of Review This review aims to provide a brief historical overview of genetic counseling and its evolution, addressing the qualified professionals and clinical requirements necessary to obtain a diagnosis and post-test guidance across different stages of patients' lives. Recent Findings Recent advances in the understanding of genetic diseases and contemporary diagnostic tools offer a novel approach to evaluating conditions both prenatally and in pediatric patients, facilitating precise diagnoses and tailored clinical interventions, including modern treatment regimens. Summary Genetic counseling is a dynamic, multidisciplinary medical process that translates the complexities of hereditary and genomic conditions into actionable clinical care. Historically rooted in pediatric dysmorphology and conventional cytogenetics, the field has evolved into an essential specialty spanning multiple organ systems and life stages. A definitive diagnostic pathway requires detailed family history, gestational assessment, and meticulous physical examination—with dysmorphology analysis serving a pivotal role from the neonatal period onward. While conventional tools such as karyotype, chromosomal microarray analysis, and Sanger sequencing remain clinically relevant, next-generation sequencing technologies—including whole-exome sequencing, whole-genome sequencing, and optical genome mapping—have dramatically improved diagnostic yield, particularly in complex or atypical phenotypes. Following molecular confirmation, genetic counseling guides the interpretation of findings, recurrence risk assessment, family screening, and reproductive planning. Importantly, therapeutic paradigms have advanced beyond supportive and symptomatic care to encompass precision medicine, such as gene editing, cell therapies, and targeted pharmacological agents. Comprehensive care demands close integration among geneticists, pediatricians, subspecialists, and allied health professionals to provide long-term clinical management, surveillance, and psychosocial support.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on the physiological determinants of endurance capacity in individuals with cerebral palsy. DESIGN: Narrative review. SUBJECTS/PATIENTS: Children and adults with cerebral palsy across the spectrum of motor function (Gross Motor Function Classification System I-V). METHODS: Relevant literature on cardiovascular, pulmonary, haematological, and musculoskeletal determinants of endurance capacity in individuals with cerebral palsy was identified and synthesized. RESULTS: Reduced cardiorespiratory fitness is common, with autonomic dysregulation potentially constraining heart rate responses during exercise, while lower oxygen pulse suggests limitations in stroke volume and peripheral oxygen extraction. Restrictive ventilatory patterns, including reduced functional lung volumes, may further impair exercise capacity. High energetic demands during basic movements exacerbate fatigue and reduce engagement in physical activity. Skeletal muscle also exhibits structural and metabolic alterations, including reduced muscle volume, capillary density, and mitochondrial function, impairing oxygen utilization and energy production. CONCLUSION: Despite methodological heterogeneity, evidence consistently indicates that integrated central and peripheral factors constrain endurance capacity, with impairments more pronounced in individuals with greater functional limitations. Adapted training modalities, such as Frame Running, show promise in improving these outcomes. Understanding these physiological determinants is essential for developing individualized interventions to improve function, participation, health, and quality of life in individuals with cerebral palsy.

ABSTRACT The phenomenon of school dropouts among adolescents in Parit Pekir presents a psychosocial complexity that demands a profound understanding of their lived experiences when accessing psychological support. This study aims to delineate the experiences and meanings attributed to guidance and counseling services by school dropouts at SMK Yapensu Sungailiat through the lens of Alfred Schutz’s social phenomenology. Data collection relied on in-depth interviews, observation, and documentary study involving six adolescent school dropouts and two guidance and counseling teachers as supporting informants. Data analysis was executed cyclically, encompassing data condensation, thematic presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal a significant shift in meaning; the informants' initial perception shadowed by fear and the stigma of the counseling room as a corrective-punitive space transformed into positive acceptance. Counselor interactions characterized by empathy, openness, and a non-judgmental stance cultivated a safe space that alleviated emotional turmoil while fostering the informants' self-efficacy. This study concludes that counseling for out-of-school adolescents plays a pivotal role as an intersubjective vehicle to reconstruct self-understanding and redesign future orientations. Community-based psychosocial support emerges as a crucial necessity to ensure the sustainable emotional recovery of marginalized adolescents. Pendampingan psikososial berbasis komunitas (community-based counseling) menjadi kebutuhan krusial guna menjamin keberlanjutan pemulihan emosional remaja marjinal.
The aim of this study was to compare pre-service teachers' preference of information stemming from different diagnostic approaches. Participants ( N = 185) evaluated vignettes containing diagnostic information from norm-referenced testing, criterion-referenced testing, and two types of information coming from dynamic testing (Graduated Prompt training scores and pretest/posttest scores). They rated these vignettes regarding their usefulness for understanding a child's difficulties and for planning individualized education. Additionally, attitudes towards diagnostics, beliefs about diagnostic goals and prior knowledge of diagnostic approaches were examined as potential moderators. Overall, information from norm-referenced testing was seen as least useful. No differences were found between the other diagnostic approaches. Moderation effects were found for all of the assessed variables.
