Summary
Written by AI, not yet AICS's view · claude-haiku-4-5-20251001This study examines the milk ladder, a clinical method used in Ireland to help children with IgE-mediated cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) gradually tolerate milk. The approach involves slowly introducing baked milk products to help children become tolerant to unheated milk. Children who followed gradual milk introduction had substantially higher rates of developing tolerance to regular milk compared to those who completely avoided milk.
Key points
- Gradual baked milk introduction resulted in 54-88.1% (mean 62.5%) of children becoming tolerant to unheated milk
- Complete milk avoidance resulted in only 0-66.7% (mean 21.42%) of children developing tolerance to unheated milk
- The milk ladder method represents a structured therapeutic approach to managing IgE-mediated CMPA in children
Limitations
The document provides only a summary of findings from a review and does not present detailed methodology, sample sizes, study quality assessment, or potential confounding variables that might affect the comparison between groups.
Abstract
IgE-mediated cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is managed in Ireland using a milk ladder, a method of gradual baked milk introduction. A recent review explored the introduction of baked milk as a treatment for IgE-mediated CMPA and demonstrated that the number of patients who became tolerant to unheated milk during the study periods was greater in the gradual milk introduction group (range 54%–88.1%, mean 62.5%) compared to those who underwent complete avoidance of milk (range 0%–66.7%, mean 21.42%)
