Summary
Written by AI, not yet AICS's view · claude-haiku-4-5-20251001This study tested whether nutrition education could improve mothers' knowledge about feeding stunted toddlers in Indonesia. Forty-two mothers received education through lectures and leaflets about proper nutrition for their children. Knowledge was measured before and after the education using a 20-question questionnaire. Mothers' knowledge improved significantly after the education, with the proportion having good knowledge increasing from 2.4% to 64.3%.
Key points
- Before education, most mothers had inadequate (50%) or adequate (47.6%) knowledge about toddler nutrition, with only 2.4% having good knowledge
- After nutrition education, 64.3% of mothers achieved good knowledge level, 26.2% had adequate knowledge, and 9.5% had inadequate knowledge
- The Wilcoxon test showed statistically significant improvement with p = 0.000
- Nutrition education was delivered through lectures and leaflet materials
- The study recommends routine implementation of nutrition education in health facilities to prevent stunting
Limitations
This study uses a pre-post design with no comparison group, so it cannot determine whether the knowledge improvement was due to the education itself or other factors. The study measures only maternal knowledge and not actual changes in child feeding practices or health outcomes.
Abstract
Nutrition education is an effective strategy to improve maternal knowledge regarding appropriate nutritional intake for toddlers, particularly in efforts to prevent stunting. This study aimed to analyze the effect of nutrition education on increasing the knowledge of mothers with stunted toddlers. A pre-experimental design with a one-group pre–post test approach was employed, involving 42 respondents selected using simple random sampling. The research instrument consisted of a 20-item knowledge questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Nutrition education was delivered through lectures and leaflet media, followed by assessments of maternal knowledge before and after the intervention. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge, as indicated by changes in knowledge categories from pre-test to post-test and the Wilcoxon test result with p = 0.000. These findings demonstrate that nutrition education plays an important role in enhancing maternal understanding of toddler nutrition as a preventive measure against stunting. Routine implementation of nutrition education in healthcare settings is recommended to strengthen promotive and preventive efforts related to child nutritional health.
