Population: About 4,700 young women and girls in villages in Sierra Leone, tracked before and through the Ebola crisis.

Key finding

In highly disrupted control villages, younger girls spent more time with men, out-of-wedlock pregnancies rose, and school enrolment fell persistently by 16 percentage points.

Early marriage among adolescents, which can affect education, psychological readiness, reproductive health and parenting.

Intervention: Education sessions for teenagers and their social environment, with talks on marriage law, reproductive health, mental readiness and parenting by two government officials, followed by discussion and a Focus Group Discussion.
Population: Teenagers and members of their social environment in Ranokomea Village, Poleang Barat District, Bombana Regency, Indonesia.

Key finding

Participants had a better understanding of the consequences of early marriage and of readiness before starting a family.
