The problem
Intervention: Phased reopening with strict health guidelines including small, fixed groups of children and elevated staff-to-child ratios to maintain health protocols
Who it was tested with: Children in Danish early childhood education and care institutions during COVID-19 reopening in spring 2020.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Two ECEC institutions were followed first-hand to observe the impact of the pandemic on pedagogy and child well-being. Observations and interviews were conducted with follow-up interviews and an online survey a year later." The study used longitudinal observation and qualitative methods to assess changes in practice and child outcomes during a natural policy change (phased reopening).
Small sample of two institutions; observational design without control group; limited quantitative data on well-being outcomes; context-specific to Danish ECEC system and pandemic response policies.
