The problem
Intervention: Food-assisted maternal and child health and nutrition programmes providing food rations to pregnant women and children from pregnancy to 2 years of age, with variations in ration size, composition, timing and duration
Who it was tested with: Pregnant women and children aged 0-2 years in Burundi and Guatemala.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Each was paired with a cluster-randomized controlled trial to evaluate impact and compare the optimal quantity and composition of food rations (Guatemala, five treatment arms) and their optimal timing and duration (Burundi, three treatment arms)." The study employed randomized controlled trial designs with multiple comparison arms to test different programme configurations and measure both costs and nutritional outcomes.
Study focused on cost-effectiveness for stunting reduction; does not report effect sizes on stunting or other nutritional outcomes, limiting comparison of absolute impact. Generalizability to other contexts unclear due to setting-specific costs and implementation factors.
