The problem
Intervention: The Health and Wellness Academy (HWA): a school-based program providing tailored nutrition education and physical activity interventions with a dedicated nutrition team
Who it was tested with: 72 students with mean age 10.43 years; 58.3% female, 75% Hispanic, 25% Black.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Pre- and post-program surveys were utilized to obtain nutrition data" and "mixed linear model regression results revealed significant time effects on both willingness to try new fruits (P = 0.011) and willingness to try new vegetables (P = 0.001)." The study measured the same group before and after intervention but lacked a control group, making it a pre-post design that shows the intervention was associated with increased willingness to try new foods.
No comparison group to establish causation; only measures willingness to try new foods rather than actual intake or health outcomes; single setting with predominantly Hispanic and Black students limits generalizability.
