The problem
Intervention: Attendance at public preschool in the US (school-based pre-k or Head Start) compared with no preschool
Who it was tested with: Race-ethnically diverse children from low-income families in the US, followed to kindergarten (n = 907) and fourth grade (n = 595).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using propensity score methods, we predict children's social skills and emotional development in kindergarten" and again in fourth grade. This is a longitudinal design with a comparison group, so it fits the experimental tier, though it is not randomised.
Not a randomised trial, so unmeasured differences between groups may remain. Fewer children were followed up in fourth grade than in kindergarten. Details of the measures are not given in the abstract.
