The problem
Intervention: Home-based Sickle Cell Collaboration for Child Development (SCCCD) intervention combining skilled occupational therapy, Parents as Teachers curriculum, and sickle cell disease-specific caregiver education delivered over 12 monthly home visits.
Who it was tested with: Infants and toddlers with sickle cell disease under 3 years of age and their caregivers (target n=25 for intervention arm)..
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"The SCCCD intervention, adapted from a pilot study, combines skilled occupational therapy, the Parents as Teachers curriculum, and SCD-specific caregiver education, delivered over 12 monthly home visits (n=25, aim 2)." The study tests whether this home-based intervention improves developmental outcomes in children with sickle cell disease who have high rates of undiagnosed developmental delays.
This is a protocol paper; no intervention results are yet available. The study is still actively recruiting and data collection is incomplete. The design includes no concurrent comparison group for the intervention arm, limiting causal inference.
