The problem
Intervention: Different pertussis vaccination schedules (accelerated vs extended for primary series and booster timing, and maternal vaccination strategies)
Who it was tested with: Young infants and their mothers across different countries.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We conducted a review of the literature on studies about the primary, booster, and/or maternal vaccination series and synthesised findings narratively." The review systematically examined multiple immunisation strategies and their impact on pertussis control outcomes, but the lack of clear superiority of any one approach reflects the complexity of optimising infant protection across diverse contexts.
The heterogeneity of study designs and settings made direct comparison of schedules challenging. Studies may have differed in testing methods, population characteristics, and outcome definitions.
