The problem
Intervention: Teacher-guided interactive mobile-based storytelling used to teach vocabulary, compared with traditional storytelling
Who it was tested with: 280 preschool children and 111 caregivers and teachers from 49 ECCE/Creche centres in the Calabar Educational Zone, Cross River State, Nigeria.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A quasi-experimental pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design was adopted for the research." This design includes a comparison group, so it fits the experimental tier, and the treatment group scored higher at post-test and at delayed follow-up.
Groups were not randomised and baseline equivalence rests on pre-test scores only. The follow-up was short (four weeks). Details on intervention length and fidelity are not reported in the abstract, and the vocabulary test was developed by the researchers.
