The problem
Intervention: Rural Dibao (Rural Minimum Living Standard Guarantee) unconditional cash transfer program
Who it was tested with: Children up to 15 years of age in rural China whose families received the Rural Dibao program.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We exploit propensity score matching and difference-in-differences techniques to evaluate the effects of the Rural Dibao program on child nutrition outcomes." This quasi-experimental design with a comparison group constructed through matching allows causal inference stronger than simple pre-post comparison, placing it in the EXPERIMENTAL tier.
Observational study design with propensity score matching; unmeasured confounding cannot be ruled out; cross-sectional variation in program uptake may not capture all relevant comparison groups
