The problem
Intervention: PDC/Baby Ubuntu programme: a bundle of early identification, care and support integrated into government health centre services in Rwanda
Who it was tested with: Children aged ≤59 months who are survivors of neonatal conditions (encephalopathy, prematurity, meningitis, severe jaundice, cerebral malaria, genetic/chromosomal conditions, seizures) and/or not meeting developmental milestones, and their caregivers, in three districts in Rwanda.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The study is a single-blind, effectiveness implementation-hybrid (type II) cluster randomised controlled trial with two arms (1:1 ratio). At cluster level, all community health centres in the three trial districts will be eligible for inclusion." This randomised design with comparison groups at the cluster level represents experimental evidence design, although findings are not yet available.
This is a study protocol registered retrospectively in July 2024, so no results, interim findings or implementation experiences are available. The effectiveness of the PDC/Baby Ubuntu programme cannot be determined from this document.
