The problem
Intervention: Universal nirsevimab immunization offered to all infants born between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025
Who it was tested with: All infants under one year of age experiencing their first RSV season in Tuscany, Italy, with approximately 90% immunization coverage.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"The percentage reduction in RSV-related hospitalisations was calculated by comparing the number of hospitalisations observed in 2024/25 with the mean number recorded across the three preceding RSV seasons." This pre-post comparison design with baseline data from three prior years provides evidence of substantial impact, though without a concurrent comparison group.
Single-center, single-region study without concurrent control group; historical comparison cohorts may differ in unmeasured ways; one season of data; cannot definitively attribute all reductions solely to nirsevimab as other factors may have influenced RSV transmission or severity
