The problem
Intervention: Assessment of current diagnostic and treatment practices for varicella infections in children via clinical vignette survey
Who it was tested with: 153 US licensed healthcare providers (50 nurses, 103 doctors), mean age 44 years, 82% licensed after 1995.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"8 clinical vignettes with information on patients with varying varicella symptoms (representing uncomplicated and complicated cases) were presented. For each vignette, HCPs selected a diagnosis and appropriate intervention(s) from pre-determined lists." This is a self-reported assessment tool that identifies gaps in provider knowledge and practice patterns but cannot demonstrate actual changes in clinical practice or patient outcomes.
Survey responses to clinical vignettes may not reflect actual clinical practice. No patient outcomes were measured. Study does not assess whether provider competency improvements would change clinical practice or health outcomes.
