The problem
Intervention: Short-term weight restoration
Who it was tested with: 20 adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa at admission, compared to 26 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We studied feedback-learning in 20 adolescent patients with AN at admission and following short-term weight restoration, compared to 26 age- and sex-matched HC using fMRI." The study used a before-and-after design within patients with a healthy control comparison, measuring brain activity and learning performance at two time points to evaluate whether weight restoration improved neural function.
No comparison group receiving alternative treatment; unclear if improvements in brain activity translated to clinical outcomes; modest sample size; no specification of countries of origin; study does not measure long-term follow-up
