The problem
Intervention: Strengthening family cohesion and family support systems through unspecified programs aimed at strengthening family relationships
Who it was tested with: 626 school-going children aged 8-13 years with elevated behavioral challenges in southwestern Uganda.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We conducted multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regression to determine the association between family cohesion and depression." The study uses regression analysis to examine relationships between family cohesion and depression outcomes in a defined population, though it is observational rather than experimental.
This is a cross-sectional analysis without a comparison group or intervention arm, so causality cannot be established. The unexpected findings regarding orphan status suggest confounding variables may not be fully controlled. The study does not describe what the family cohesion intervention would entail.
