The problem
Intervention: BikeSafe Elementary School Curriculum (BESC), an off-bicycle, standards-aligned program delivered during physical education classes
Who it was tested with: 159 younger students (grades 2-3, ages 7-8) and 85 older students (grades 4-5, ages 9-11) from nine Miami-Dade County public elementary schools.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"From August 2024 to May 2025, P.E. teachers at nine Miami-Dade County public elementary schools implemented the BESC with grades 2-3 (ages 7-8) and 4-5 (ages 9-11). Students completed pre-post assessments." The before-and-after design with standardized assessments demonstrates knowledge acquisition, though without a control group the evidence is limited to PRE_POST tier.
Study lacks a comparison or control group, so cannot establish causation. Only knowledge gains were measured; actual behavioral change and injury reduction outcomes were not assessed. Results are from a single urban county and may not generalize to other settings.
