The problem
Intervention: 2017 Malawi government legislation making marriage under age 18 illegal with fines for violators; studied alongside the More Than Brides Alliance program aimed at delaying marriage and improving sexual and reproductive health access
Who it was tested with: Married and unmarried adolescents, parents of adolescents, and key community members in Mangochi and Nkhata Bay districts, Malawi.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We conducted focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with married and unmarried adolescents, parents of adolescents, and key community members in Mangochi and Nkhata Bay. Data were collected as part of an evaluation of the More Than Brides Alliance program aimed at delaying marriage and improving access to sexual and reproductive health services in Malawi." The study documents community perceptions of law enforcement effects rather than measuring actual changes in child marriage prevalence through experimental comparison.
Qualitative study based on perceptions rather than measured outcomes; no quantification of prevalence of marriage withdrawal or underground marriages; part of an RCT evaluation but this analysis does not present quantitative impact data; limited to two districts.
